Sustainable Development Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere
Poverty is more than just a lack of income or resources. It also means facing hunger, malnutrition, poor health, limited access to education, social discrimination, and exclusion. Poverty affects people's dignity, freedom, and potential to contribute to society. It also undermines peace and security, human rights, and environmental sustainability.
According to the World Bank, 689 million people lived on less than $1.90 a day in 2017, the international poverty line. That is 9.2% of the world's population. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, an estimated 97 million more people fell into extreme poverty in 2020. The pandemic has also worsened the situation of those who were already poor or vulnerable, especially women, children, elderly, disabled, and marginalized groups.
The United Nations has adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global plan of action to end poverty and achieve a better future for all. The first of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere by 2030. This means ensuring that everyone has access to basic services, social protection, and economic opportunities. It also means empowering people to participate in decision-making and to claim their rights.
To achieve this goal, we need to work together at all levels: governments, civil society, private sector, and individuals. We need to mobilize resources, invest in human capital, promote inclusive growth, and reduce inequalities. We need to support the poorest and most vulnerable countries and regions, especially those affected by conflict and climate change. We need to monitor progress and hold ourselves accountable for our commitments.
Ending poverty is not only a moral duty but also a smart investment. It will boost economic growth, reduce social tensions, enhance environmental protection, and foster global solidarity. Ending poverty is possible if we act now and act together.
